We chat with Ryan Horrigan, Chief Content Officer of Felix & Paul Studios, about virtual reality’s role in Hollywood and the evolution of immersive content. Ryan comes from a film studio executive background (working on films like Academy Award-winning 12 Years A Slave), and left the traditional movie industry behind to join cinematic virtual reality company Felix & Paul. The Montreal-based studio consistently pushes the narrative edges of the 360 genre - with such subjects as Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Lebron James, and Cirque du Soleil. Recently, they announced a closer partnership with the Fox Innovation Lab, and at Sundance they premiered Miyubi-- a 40-minute long groundbreaking immersive narrative. Ryan shares with us his perspective on how the entertainment industry’s views on virtual reality as a medium have developed over the past year, and what needs to happen next for the art (and commerce) to grow.

Rob Ruffler (@RobRuffler), Sr. Director of Virtual Reality at Viacom NEXT (@ViacomNEXT), stops by to chat about music, art, and making the content of the future. Born out of Viacom's R&D Lab, Viacom NEXT is the media conglomerate's emerging technology-focused arm. We chat about how they're conceptualizing interactivity, user interfaces, and the future of entertainment in the context of their critically-acclaimed roster of content like Smash Party (a collaboration with animation powerhouse Titmouse), Chocolate (from the genius mind of Tyler Hurd, creator of Butts and Old Friend), and the upcoming Melody of Dust (which features music, innovative live action capture techniques and will premiere at SXSW).

Kimberly Cooper is co-founder and CEO of Prologue Immersive (@PrologueVR), the VR/AR-focused division born out of Prologue--  a Venice, CA-based VFX studio that has worked on such projects like Iron Man, Iron Man 2 (Tony Stark’s floating computer interface was designed in Prologue’s studios), XMEN, and SE7EN. We chat with Kimberly about why Hollywood visual effects studios and traditional 3D artists are turning to create virtual reality content using game engines, as well as Prologue’s work like the unique stop-motion 360 video Memos from Hell and their post-production work on the VR companion to TNT’s Major Crimes television show. In addition to content creators, Prologue Immersive also creates platforms and applications--  Kimberly shares with us how they are thinking of VR as an intuitive communication tool, and are currently developing a next generation interface based on their design of the Jarvis system in Iron Man - http://prologueimmersive.com/

We chat with Tyler Hurd (@suppleteet), whose widely acclaimed virtual reality music video Chocolate recently premiered at Sundance, about all things fun and joyful in VR. In addition to talking about the delightful champagne and kitten cannon-filled Chocolate, we discuss Tyler’s now-infamous VR short Butts, and the music video favorite Old Friend. Within the theme of Tyler’s drive to create things that make people giggle, we delve into interaction, body ownership, and virtual environments that make you feel real emotions.
